Biotechnology 101

This reader introduces the students to biotechnology. It discusses chromosomes, DNA and genes and how traits are passed from parents to offspring. Students will learn about Mendal, Punnett squares, dominant and recessive traits. They are exposed to the alphebet of DNA - Adenine, Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine. They will learn what it takes to grow a better plant from a plant breeder and geneticist. They are introduced to selective breeding, natural selection and some of the new techniques being used in selective breeding today. The term GMO is discussed. There is also a timeline showing the developments in biotechnology over the years.
